This is my first post on FB even though I joined almost 10 years ago. I am sharing some personal/professional news as well as a request for support/input/advice. Thank you in advance.
I believe that young people can have a productive and worthwhile present and a productive and worthwhile future. Traditional schools (public and private) claim that the content, methods and systems of teaching and learning will lead to a productive and worthwhile future, but they generally dismiss if that content, methods, and systems lead to a productive and worthwhile present.
If we trust people’s curiosity to motivate learning, giving young people a choice in the system, content and methods of their own teaching and learning promotes a productive and worthwhile present, and future.
So, after being a bartender, weather forecaster, bicycle mechanic, bartender again, high school science teacher, middle school science teacher and restorative practices trainer and coach, I’ve figured out what I want to do when I grow up. I am planning to start a Self-Directed Education Center in Montgomery County, PA in January 2025.
I am currently working with Liberated Learners for support in the planning process.
I am posting this because I need some help sooner than later.
First, I need a name for the center. I have been playing with 2 ideas for names. Both are a bit of a play on words. The first is A Way. I like this one because it brings the idea of A Way to learn and it is also AWay from traditional school.
The second is Current. There are 2 ideas in Current that resonate: the idea of right now, and the idea of the flow of water and electricity.
A Way Learning Community or Current Learning Community
Would you send your teens or preteens to either? I’m also open to other suggestions.
